Step-by-Step Application

How to Apply Henna to Hair

  • 1. Mix

Combine henna with lemon juice (or coffee/tea). Cover tightly with cling film or a plastic bag. Let it rest for a few hours or overnight—the longer, the stronger. Lumps will dissolve into smooth paste.

  • 2. Prep Hair

Wash thoroughly to remove oils and dirt (or apply to unwashed hair if it's coarse or unruly when clean).

  • 3. Apply Henna

Coat hair evenly from root to tip. Don't worry about scalp coverage—it conditions beautifully. Wrap in plastic and leave for 2-4 hours. Longer = richer colour.

  • 4. Apply Indigo (Optional)

After rinsing henna, mix indigo with amla powder and apply. Leave for 1 hour (dark brown) or up to 2 hours (jet black).

  • 5. Rinse & Care

Rinse thoroughly with water or conditioner. Avoid shampoo for 24 hours for best colour retention. If you must wash, use a tiny amount of chemical-free shampoo.

FAQs

henna questions, answered

Yes—henna turns grey hair a vibrant copper-red or orange-red. For shades of brown (light, medium, dark) or black, mix henna with indigo powder. Want darker tones? Increase the indigo ratio. Want lighter, warmer tones? Add more henna.

  • Blonde → Vivid red
  • Medium Brown → Auburn
  • Dark Brown → Dark auburn
  • Black → Black with red glow (builds over time)
  • Grey → Copper-red
  • Red → Vibrant red

To achieve browns and blacks, combine henna with indigo:

  • Light brown: 70% henna, 30% indigo
  • Medium brown: 50% henna, 50% indigo
  • Dark brown: 70% indigo, 30% henna
  • Nearly black: 90% indigo, 10% henna

Use a two-step process: Apply henna first (2+ hours), rinse, then apply indigo for 1 hour (black) or 1.5–2 hours (jet black). This method works best for covering grey completely.

Yes. Add amla powder to your henna mix to reduce red intensity and achieve cooler, more neutral browns.

Minimum 2 hours, but longer is better—both for colour intensity and hair conditioning. Leave it on as long as time permits for maximum benefit.

Any acidic liquid for longer-lasting colour:

  • Lemon, apple, or orange juice (diluted with water)
  • Tea (chamomile works beautifully) or coffee
  • Apple cider vinegar

Note: Indigo should only be mixed with water—acidic liquids reduce its dyeing power.

Only during the initial rinse. After that, colour is locked in and won’t transfer noticeably.

Yes. A 50/50 mix gives bright copper-red. More cassia = lighter blonde tones. More henna = deeper, vibrant red.

Absolutely. Refrigerate for a few days or freeze for months without affecting colour quality. No wastage. You can even re-freeze.

Depends on hair length and thickness:

  • Cropped: 30–50g
  • Short: 50–100g
  • Neck-length: 150–200g
  • Shoulder-length: 250–300g
  • Waist-length: 350–500g

Yes—it’s body art quality, triple-sifted, and safe for facial hair. For eyebrows, use stencils for precision and wipe excess immediately. Follow the same mixing ratios as hair (e.g., 90% indigo/10% henna for nearly black). Test timing carefully—10–15 minutes is usually enough.

Absolutely. Henna works beautifully on all hair types and textures, from straight to coily.

Yes. It’s body art quality henna, perfect for intricate designs.

Henna is semi-permanent. It coats the hair shaft rather than penetrating it, so while colour may appear to fade slightly over time (especially on grey), it won’t wash out completely. Colour builds and intensifies with repeated use. On grey hair, fading may be more noticeable depending on individual hair porosity.

No. Henna and indigo are deposit-only dyes—they add colour but don’t contain bleach or PPD to lighten. To go lighter with plant dyes, you’d need to bleach first (not recommended unless necessary).

No. This is 100% pure, natural henna powder—no additives, no chemicals, no metallic salts.

Yes. While we’re not yet certified organic (we’re working on it), our henna and indigo are grown and processed organically in certified organic fields by trusted suppliers.
